Syracuse Women’s Basketball Continued Their Hot Start Against Coppin State

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse followed up their first 100-point game of the Felicia Leggette-Jack era with a dominating performance winning 80-47 against Coppin State improving to 3-0 on the season.

The game showed just how deep this years Syracuse team is.

“It’s our family against their team. I think that when we got to go to team its got to be like Dyaisha (Fair) didn’t play in the first quarter and we actually did a very good job in the first quarter. I think that the more Lexi (McNabb) and KP (Kennedi Perkins) get in shape of playing basketball up and down the floor the better we are going to get as a team,” said coach Felicia Leggette-Jack.

The scoring early was led by freshman Sophie Burrows, who hit two quick threes minutes into the game. Izabel Varejão had her way in the post all night long. Burrows finished with nine points on the night while Varejão finished with 13 points, two steals and a block.

“I feel like I called for the ball more. I demanded the ball a little bit more than I have been in the last couple games. So, I feel like for me it made a big difference. I feel like just demanding it and just attacking more,” said Varejão.

In the second quarter, Dyaisha Fair, who was recently named to the Wooden Award Preseason Watch List, checked into the game and never came out. She scored 16 points and shot 4-8 from three. Fair added three boards and three assists.

The post has been a focus for Syracuse all season and that continued Wednesday. The Orange grabbed 42 total rebounds, and scored 40 out of their 80 points in the paint.

The loudest pop of the night came for Marilena Triantafylli when she completed a three-point play near the end of the game. The bench exploded in excitement to cap off a great win for the team.

Coppin State was led by former Syracuse basketball player Faith Blackstone, who paced all scorers with 19 in her return to the Dome. Early in the game the Eagles lost guard Angel Jones due to injury.

Syracuse will be back in action on Sunday, November 20 at 12 p.m. against No. 20 Maryland in College Park.
