Syracuse gets their third straight victory, defeating the Georgetown Hoyas 83-64. Even though this game was a blowout, things were looking dicey for Syracuse to start off the game. Syracuse was down 17-6 to start off the first half but then immediately went on a 12-0 run to take the lead. Jesse Edwards was crucial, scoring four points in that run.
It was a nip and tuck game until there were about four and a half minutes left in the first half when Syracuse was down 30-29. After that, Syracuse went on a 16-4 run to end the half. Judah Mintz was excellent in the first half, scoring nine points and dishing out five assists. He got to the basket and was able to draw defenders in to get easier shots for his teammates. Jesse Edwards was also great, going 4-5 from the field and scoring eight points. Even though guard Joe Girard lll shot 1-4 from three, he was 3-4 inside the arc, scoring 12 points.
It wasn’t just the Syracuse and Georgetown rivalry that made the game special. Head Coach Jim Boeheim and ex-Orange Pearl Washington were inducted into the ring of honor at halftime. Even though Boeheim didn’t want to be a part of the ceremony, he gave a lot of respect to be honored alongside Pearl, whom Boeheim enjoyed coaching.
“From the first day I saw him, he was the most exciting player I’ve ever seen, and he still is,” said Boeheim. “There was a lot of better players, but nobody was as exciting as Pearl Washington was.”
In the second half, Syracuse maintained their lead the whole time. Georgetown made a run and was able to cut their deficit down to seven with about five minutes left in the game, but in the end, Syracuse held them off and extended their lead. Jesse Edwards dominated the second half going 6-9 from the field and finishing with 20 points. He was also great on defense, getting five blocks. He made it tough for Georgetown’s big men like Qudus Wahab and Akok Akok to finish at the rim and closed out to Georgetown’s shooters. Head Coach Patrick Ewing after the game said seeing Edwards play reminded him of himself.
“The things he was doing remind me of myself back when I was young,” said Ewing. “Leaping from the middle of the paint and coming out to the three point line blocking shots.”
Mintz, even though he shot 1-5 in the second half, was impactful in other areas of the game. He got to the basket and shot 11 free throws in game, going 10-11. In addition, he got into the passing lanes and had five steals. He was also a facilitator, finishing with 10 assists and drawing two to the ball and finding open teammates. Boeheim was impressed with Mintz ability to run the offense.
“He really played like a point guard tonight. You know he can score,” said Boeheim. “We need him to score, but he made some really good passes as well.”
Syracuse will look to get their fourth straight win when they play at home against Monmouth on December 12.
