Ira Schoffel to speak about his sportswriting career

On November 11th, Ira Schoffel will visit Newhouse to speak to students about his career as a sportswriter. The event will be hosted by Michael Villegas, a graduate student in the broadcast & digital journalism program

Schoffel is currently the managing editor of Warchant.com, a website devoted to Florida State University sports coverage. He has been covering collegiate athletics since 1991, and has been specifically on the FSU beat since 2002.

During his career, Schoffel served as the managing editor at The Osceola, and eventually became the general manager of the publication. Additionally, he worked as a senior sports writer, then the sports editor, of the Tallahassee Democrat. Schoffel also frequently contributes to various regional and national publications.

Schoffel’s work has received national recognition in the Associated Press Sports Editors Writing Contest twice. In 2012, he took the top prize in project reporting, and in 2013, he and a colleague took first place for explanatory writing. 

The event will take place on Friday, November 11 at 11:30 a.m. in Newhouse 3, room 251.
