Syracuse Women’s Basketball Continues Winning Ways Against Northeastern

Syracuse struggled early but were able to continue their strong start to the season defeating Northeastern 79-57, improving their record to 8-1.

The game was a tale of two halves for Syracuse. In the first half the Orange struggled to have shots fall. Shooting only 36 percent from the field as the Northeastern started hot behind Deja Bristol and Derin Erdogan each scoring 8 points early. Erdogan led all scorers with 23 while shooting 5-for-8 from three.

Syracuse settled down when coach Felisha Legette-Jack subbed in Saniaa Wilson. The junior was able to step up and really match the energy that Northeastern was bringing early in the game. She finished with nine points off the bench on perfect shooting.

Entering halftime the Orange were only up by five, leading 32-27.

“I got into them a little bit and challenged them to step up the energy. I changed the lineup a little bit and let them know that everybody is replaceable, including myself,” said coach Legette-Jack.

After the break, motivated by their coach Syracuse came out firing shooting 64 percent from the field and 5-of-10 from three. The Huskies would not go away though, cutting the score to 45-41 with just over 3 minutes left in the third quarter. Freshman Sophie Burrows, who finished with a plus minus of 29, then knocked in a couple of threes and Cuse went on a 9-0 run themselves to really put the game away heading into the fourth.

“Everybody on our team, everybody on our bench can come in the game and be effective. Whether Dyaisha (Fair) scores two or scores 40, she’s got teammates that can contribute,” Wilson said.

Syracuse finished the game with 26 total points from the bench.

Georgia Woolley paced the Orange with 17 points. While Dyaisha Fair shook off a slow start to finish with 14 on 6-of-9 from the field and 2-of-3 from deep.

Syracuse will be back in action on the road at Ohio Saturday, December 9. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
