Broadcast and Digital Journalism
Tommy Farrell grew up in Toms River, NJ and attended Donovan Catholic High School. After that, he received his B.A. from Stonehill College in Easton, MA with a major in Mediated Communication and double minor in Journalism and English. Tommy was also a four year letter winner on Stonehill College's football team as a Linebacker. During his time at Stonehill, Tommy and his two friends founded "Skynews" which used a live studio to produce news and sports updates for the student body on YouTube and across campus. He had roles at Skynews such as news director, news anchor, sports anchor, and executive producer. Tommy also wrote for the student newspaper, The Summit, as well as doing the play-by-play broadcasts on WSHL 91.3FM and Stonehill Skyhawks TV for men's basketball, women's basketball, men's ice hockey, and women's lacrosse. During the summers home in New Jersey, Tommy interned then worked at New Jersey 101.5 FM radio as a multimedia producer and freelance writer. He has also completed an internship at The Boston Globe and Boston.com as a Breaking News Writer in 2015. Tommy's parents, Tom and Linda, are both in the education field as a superintendent and kindergarten teacher, respectively. His father Tom graduated from Syracuse University in 1989. His sister Brianna is an undergraduate student at Fairfield University and his little brother Connor will be attending high school next year. Tommy's cousin, Matt Farrell, is the point guard on Notre Dame's basketball team so this ACC basketball rivalry should be a little more personal for the Farrell family this year. He plans to be a play-by-play announcer for college football and/or college basketball, as well as a talk show host and reporter. Tommy realized he wanted to work in sports media during Super Bowl XXXV when Greg Gumbel and Phil Simms were on the call.
