Broadcast and Digital Journalism
Monica Ortiz grew up in Monahans, Texas where sports are a dominant influence on the culture. She attended Texas Tech University, majoring in Advertising. She received a master's degree in Mass Communications from Texas Tech in May of 2017, where she taught a public speaking course as an instructor for the College of Media and Communications. During Monica’s time in graduate school, she became interested in sports reporting after taking a sports media class. She then became immersed herself in the sports environment, working for Fox Sports as a runner and interning for Fox 34 Sports in Lubbock, Texas. She also worked the Heart of Dallas Bowl and Armed Forces Bowl as part of the media team. When basketball season approached, she worked with Texas Tech TV for men’s and women's home games. Monica hopes to get as much experience as possible during her time at Syracuse University reporting for various events. After working in a smaller market for several years, she wants to work for a major sports broadcasting network.
