Julian McKenzie is from Montreal, Quebec, Canada and spent the last three years at Concordia University’s Specialization Multiplatform Journalism program. At Concordia, Julian was the print and online sports editor of Concordia’s The Link Newspaper, one of the university’s two campus newspapers. Julian also created and directed a Montreal hip-hop blog for The Link Newspaper, known as The Scratch, as well as a sports blog and podcast for the publication known as the Pressbox Hat Trick Podcast.
He also was the co-host and producer of The Starting Rotation, a weekly sports radio show on the campus radio station, CJLO 1690AM. In 2015, Montreal magazine Cult MTL named the show the sixth best in Montreal. Julian also wrote and read news for the station’s news program, and was a co-creator of CJLO Sports, an initiative that allowed students to broadcast sporting events through the radio station. Finally, CJLO honored Julian at their year-end award ceremony in May 2016, winning for Best Radio Voice and On-Air Professionalism.
Outside of school, Julian has written for numerous publications including The Montreal Gazette, NOISEY, The Manitoban, the Montreal Community Contact, Auxjourslejour and Watchmojo.com. In 2015, Julian was the first ever winner of Sportsnet Recruited, a contest directed at sports journalists covering university sports, and his prize-winning article, “From Stinger to Gaiter” was featured on Sportsnet.ca. Julian has also interned for CTV Montreal, TSN Radio 690, CJAD 800 News Montreal, the Bell Media Street Team.
